Bishop Yvette Flunder will share her personal faith journey, discussing how growing up in a traditional Black church impacted her beliefs about sex and sexuality, and how she was led to pastoring an "affirming" congregation.
Defining Sexuality & Gender Expression
Many people may not even know what some of the abbreviations and terms currently used mean, and some older people may use words that could be considered derogatory today. This session will teach attendees what various abbreviations or acronyms mean and how to communicate regarding sex and sexuality in a manner that is respectable.
Not In My House: Helping Families Love Their Loved Ones
Sometimes loving family members may not know how to handle situations that they do not agree with. They may love their child, sibling, grandchild, but fundamentally oppose what they have done or who they love or who they are. This session will help family members who may have (or are considering) shunned or kicked relatives out because of their sexuality, identity, or unwed pregnancy.
What Do You Believe About Sex?
This session will help participants better understand what they believe about sex, where those views came from and what the Bible actually teaching about sex.
Affirming vs. Tolerance
There is a difference between accepting someone for who they are and just accepting that they exist. This session will cause participants to think about whether they have any unconscious biases.
Talking to Your Kids About Sex
This session will help parents wishing to have a helpful dialogue with their children regarding sex, sexuality, gender identity and other topics.
Creating Community (For Church Leaders Only)
This session will help pastors, ministers, deacons, youth workers, and other church leaders move toward becoming an affirming and inclusive congregation. Mandatory for those wishing to receive a certificate from The Center for Lifelong Learning & Church Leadership.
